Triathlon Training

In addition to the run training sessions at Trent Park we have our own, allbeit informal, bike and swim training sessions.
The sessions may vary according to the time of year and weather.

Cycling

On Sunday mornings we meet for a bike ride, usually in two groups depending upon ability and aspiration. The two groups cover around 25 or 50 miles at an average speed of 15 to perhaps 20 miles per hour depending on the route and the time last night's party finished!
Although the route varies we have a few set routes that provide a mixed bag of training. Our most popular routes are (click on the name for a route map):
  • Furzefield: Out to Potters Bar and follow the old Furzefield tri route, one, two or three loops, each loop about 15Km plus the 20Km out and back, fairly flat except for Mosquito Hill.
  • Hatfield: Out through Potters Bar, Hatfield and Welwyn GC, one two or three loops of Hatfield, WGC and Sandridge, each loop about 20Km plus 20Km out and back.
  • The Little Alps: Cuffley, Newgate Street, Hertford, Essendon, Brookmans Park, Potters Bar and back. Only just over 52Km but a few "good" hills to make the difference.
In addition to the above there are several á la carte routes that take in north Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex, the actual route is often decided on the day depending upon the weather and inclination of the riders, whatever the route we will try and cater for all needs and provide alternate routes or shortcuts for less experienced cyclists.
Our usual Sunday meeting point is in Enfield (see map), in the winter we set off at 9.30am, in the summer we set off at 8.30am.
In the summer we have additional cyle sessions weekday evenings and during the day (when you are working from home!) Please get in touch for more details as times and routes vary.
There are some basic common sense rules we ask ALL cyclists to adopt when training with us, you must wear an approved safety helmet and abide by the rules of the Highway Code.

Swimming

Due to the small (but growing) size of the Triathlon community within the club and that some of our members are also members of local gymnasiums with pools it is difficult to justify investing in dedicated pool time due to the cost of hiring a pool and lifguards, also most swimming pools are usually only available for club hire during unsocial hours.
However, we do have our own qualified swim teacher who organises swim training sessions through Enfield's Sports Development Team and Enfield Leisure Centers Trust. Whilst these sessions are also open to the general public they cater for a range of swimming abilities and in particular stroke and technique improvement.
The sessions take place on Wednesday and Friday evenings, please contact us or the Sports Development Team on 020 8379 3769 for more information.
From Autumn through to late Spring we meet at 7.00am on Saturday mornings at Furzefield pool in Potters Bar, this is a public swim session but usually very quiet and we can usually "adopt" two lanes of the 33m pool.
In the summer we also use a lake in Hertfordshire for open water swim training. These sessions take place early Saturday mornings and continue through until mid-September, we can also use the lake Sunday mornings and certain weekday evenings.
There are changing facilities (no showers) entry to the lake is via shallow but slippery ramp.
The lake is about 800m in circumference and is clean throughout the year.
There are some stringent safety rules that MUST be adopted by ALL swimmers - no matter how experienced you may be!
  • You must be capable of swimming at least one lap of the lake (800m) unaided
  • Wetsuits are mandatory - the lake is deep and cold.
  • A coloured swim hat (yellow for TPRC members) must be worn whilst in the water (wear two in early summer - it is cold)
  • You must not swim alone but always have a "buddy" with you.
  • The lake can only be used when there are no sailing activities, the sailing club have priority use of the lake.
  • All swimmers must be members of a BLTTA affiliated club (NO CASUAL SWIMMERS)
Access to the lake is via a track from the main road through two locked gates, TPRC has a key to these gates. Please do not attempt to access the lake by any other means, as you will be trespassing.
TPRC are afiliated to the Blue Lagoon Triathlon Training Association (BLTTA) and sponsors member's use of the facilities at the lake
